Takamatsuzuka Tumulus - Kitora Tumulus - Kengoshizuka Tumulus
Tumulus (Kofun in Japanese) are large burial mounds built between the 3rd and 7th centuries to entomb Japan’s emperors, imperial family members, and other powerful figures. Asuka is home to over 1,000 kofun, including historically significant sites such as octagonal tumuli built for emperors who ruled during the 120 years when Asuka was Japan’s capital. Two of Japan’s tumuli with rare ancient wall paintings—both designated National Treasures—can also be found here.
To understand death is to understand life. Exploring these ancient tumuli offers a window into the spiritual values of the Japanese people, many of which continue to shape our lives today.
