Route:04 Exploring the ruins of medieval Japanese castles (Nature)

【Takatori Castle: Japan’s Strongest Mountain Fortress】
Perched atop 584-meter-high Mount Takatori, Takatori Castle began construction in the 14th century and is often referred to as the strongest castle in Japan. Although the main keep no longer stands, the layers of stone walls that emerge from the forest evoke the era when samurai once roamed its grounds. Visitors can also enjoy breathtaking scenery that changes with the seasons.
At the foot of the mountain lies the old castle town. In its upper half, rows of samurai residences once stood, while the lower half was lined with merchants’ houses. Even today, the area retains much of its historical charm and atmosphere.
