Route:08 The Role of Women in Ancient Japan (History/Culture)

Kengoshizuka Tumulus - Mansoleum of Empress Jito - Asuka Palace site - Takamatsuzuka Tumulus

In ancient Japan, women held relatively high status and were treated as equals to men in matters such as inheritance of land. During the 200-year-long Asuka period and the following Nara period, eight women ascended to the throne, and for nearly half of that time—96 years—Japan was ruled by female emperors. This course takes you on a journey to visit the remains of these remarkable women in Asuka, where you can reflect on their lives and uncover many untold stories that are not found in history books.
