Japan’s recorded history begins in the Asuka period, which started in the late 6th century. The heart of this era was in what is now Asuka Village and the surrounding area in Nara Prefecture—truly the cradle of Japanese civilization. Many of the social systems and cultural values established during this time still shape modern Japan today.
On this tour, you’ll explore how the foundations of Japan were laid and gain a deeper understanding of the spirit and structure of Japanese society.

Route:02 Discovering Japan from the perspective of ancient tumuli (History)

Takamatsuzuka Tumulus - Kitora Tumulus - Kengoshizuka Tumulus

Tumulus (Kofun in Japanese) are large burial mounds built between the 3rd and 7th centuries to entomb Japan’s emperors, imperial family members, and other powerful figures. Asuka is home to over 1,000 kofun, including historically significant sites such as octagonal tumuli built for emperors who ruled during the 120 years when Asuka was Japan’s capital. Two of Japan’s tumuli with rare ancient wall paintings—both designated National Treasures—can also be found here.
To understand death is to understand life. Exploring these ancient tumuli offers a window into the spiritual values of the Japanese people, many of which continue to shape our lives today.

Route:04 Exploring the ruins of medieval Japanese castles (Nature)

【Takatori Castle: Japan’s Strongest Mountain Fortress】
Perched atop 584-meter-high Mount Takatori, Takatori Castle began construction in the 14th century and is often referred to as the strongest castle in Japan. Although the main keep no longer stands, the layers of stone walls that emerge from the forest evoke the era when samurai once roamed its grounds. Visitors can also enjoy breathtaking scenery that changes with the seasons.
At the foot of the mountain lies the old castle town. In its upper half, rows of samurai residences once stood, while the lower half was lined with merchants’ houses. Even today, the area retains much of its historical charm and atmosphere.

The oldest Buddhist temple in Japan, Asuka-dera, began construction in 587 in Asuka. As you visit Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, take a moment to reflect on how these two religions have shaped both the Japanese people and their culture, while also enjoying the unique beauty each tradition offers.

Route:06 Looking into the Japanese spirit through waka poetry (Culture)

Amakashino-oka Hill - Inukai Manyo Memorial Hall - Complex of Manyo Culture - (Lunch) - Asuka river

【A journey through the Manyoshu, the world's oldest anthology of poetry, still beloved today】
The Manyoshu is the oldest existing collection of Japanese poetry, compiled between the 7th and 8th centuries. It consists of waka, a form of Japanese poetry made up of 31 syllables. The Manyoshu contains around 4,500 poems, expressing the thoughts and emotions of a wide range of people from various social classes, including not only royalty and nobles, but also farmers, craftsmen, soldiers, and courtesans.
As Asuka was once the capital of Japan, many of these poems were composed here. Why not take a journey through the stone monuments inscribed with these poems, and immerse yourself in the love, emotions toward close ones, and sense of the changing seasons that people of that era experienced?

【A Journey into the Heart of Japanese Cuisine】
Japanese cuisine has been recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and is now loved by people all over the world. This course allows you to dive deeper into the foundations of Japanese food, such as soy sauce and sake. Additionally, from January to May, you can enjoy strawberry picking of famous varieties unique to Nara Prefecture, such as "Kotoka" and "Asuka Ruby," known for their delicious flavor.

Route:08 The Role of Women in Ancient Japan (History/Culture)

Kengoshizuka Tumulus - Mansoleum of Empress Jito - Asuka Palace site - Takamatsuzuka Tumulus

In ancient Japan, women held relatively high status and were treated as equals to men in matters such as inheritance of land. During the 200-year-long Asuka period and the following Nara period, eight women ascended to the throne, and for nearly half of that time—96 years—Japan was ruled by female emperors. This course takes you on a journey to visit the remains of these remarkable women in Asuka, where you can reflect on their lives and uncover many untold stories that are not found in history books.

Ishibutai Tumulus - Monkey Stones - Tortoise Stone - Sakafuneishi - Masuda no Iwafune

Asuka is home to many mysterious stone structures dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries. The question of who built them and for what purpose remains unsolved to this day. This course invites you to explore these enigmatic stone creations and embark on a journey to uncover their secrets.
