Looking for a deeper connection with Japan?
You may have explored Tokyo.
You may have walked through Kyoto.
But beyond the well-known places,
there are quieter landscapes —
where Japan’s cultural roots still shape everyday life.
Kyoto refined Japan’s culture over centuries.
But the foundations — its beliefs, its relationship with nature,
and the shape of its society — began earlier.
In the southern region of Nara,
those origins can still be quietly experienced today.
The cradle of Japan and the Japanese
Even before the time when the capital was in Kyoto or Nara, the first capital of Japan was in Asuka from 592 to 710. It was a global era when international exchange with ancient China and the countries of the Korean Peninsula was active. It was also during this period that the country was first called “Japan.”
A social system centered on the Emperor was established, and the foundations of many social systems and customs were generated during this period and continue to this day . A collection of 4,500 Waka poems that described the hearts of the Japanese people was also compiled during this period, and the sensibilities of the people portrayed in these poems are still passed down to Japanese people of today.

Asuka, where the origins of Japanese history began, is home to numerous historical heritage sites, including Japan’s oldest temple and Buddha statue, as well as the ancient tumuluses where rest emperors, princes and princesses who lived in Asuka 1400 years ago.
In addition, the scenery of Asuka village with traditional architects’ houses surrounded by overlapping green mountains and clear streams is a landscape that evokes nostalgia for many Japanese people.
Enjoy a journey that touches the origins of Japan while taking in the historical heritage and the breath of nature that connects to the hearts of Japanese people.

Tsuyoshi Shiotsu (Representative Guide)
I think the best part of traveling is encountering something out of the ordinary. What I value most as a guide is not just explaining what you can see at your travel destination, but also conveying the thoughts and feelings of the people behind it. To that end, I provide easy-to-understand explanations of Japan's unique customs and Japanese sensibilities.
Since my twenties, I have lived in three countries other than my native Japan, experiencing many different cultures and customs. Sometimes it was a surprise, but often it was a joy. Japanese customs and the way Japanese people think are also quite different compared to other countries. I hope that our guests will enjoy these differences, while at the same time feeling a fresher appreciation for their own country.
